Thresholds

A threshold is not just a doorway, entrance or separation of space, it is a super important training tool for your dog. Thresholds can be used to teach boundaries, respect for space, and can even discourage aggressive tendencies and rude behaviors.

How do I use a threshold?

- HOME VISITORS & GUESTS

Does your dog rush your guests as soon as they enter the door? Teach your dog to place behind a threshold everytime the doorbell rings or someone knocks. Do not allow them to leave the place until you release them, which should be well after things have calmed down. After some time, your dog will learn to ignore newcomers rather than jump on and trip your guests.

- EATING

We've all seen it. The intense stare. The drooling. The statue pose, whining, even stealing food from the table. All for the idea of so much as a grain of rice hitting the floor. Not only is this behavior annoying and disrespectful, human food can be harmful to our dogs and can even cause stomach upsets and hot spots. NONE of us need an extra Vet bill, either! Curb this unwanted behavior by asking your dog to lay down behind a threshold until everyone's done eating. Again, use the release cue when the coast is clear.

- RESPECT

Most dogs are natural born followers, happily taking a submissive role; however, many will overtake an ill-suited leadership position if left without rules and boundaries. This can end up causing major behavioral problems. When entering or exiting the house, make your dog wait behind the threshold until you are out (or in) the door first, and when he is quiet, invite him to follow you into YOUR space. This will send a clear message to your dog that you are the pack leader.
